For me, Sufism is a well-defined science, not a hypothesis where guesses are made in the hope of eventual correctness. It is a proven path. Tariqa and Sufism teach that everything is based on the heart. If the heart is pure, the entire being becomes pure. As Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) said, "There is a piece of flesh in the body; if it becomes good, the whole body becomes good, but if it gets spoiled, the whole body gets spoiled, and that is the heart."
Life is a precious gift, and the Divine wants us to realize the true reality of this gift. Many people pursue lower existence and physical desires, but some are inspired by the Divine to seek a higher reality. Through self-discipline, we can see the majesty, magnificence, and munificence of the Divine soul and the lights that the Divine has placed upon it.
Listening with our physical ears for enjoyment prevents the opening of spiritual hearing. Therefore, we must train ourselves to control what we hear and avoid unnecessary sounds that can affect the heart. This knowledge, inherited from the prophets and saints (awliyaullah), teaches us that what we listen to affects our heart. By controlling our physical senses, we can open our spiritual senses.
When we close our eyes, our outer vision stops, allowing the inner vision of the heart to begin. Every act of abstinence and fasting gives birth to a deeper reality. If we indulge in our senses, this reality remains hidden. Thus, abstaining from certain sounds can open our spiritual hearing, and abstaining from certain sights can open the real vision of the soul. What we see in this world is an illusion; all atoms are in constant motion, and none of it is real. The soul, however, can witness what Allah (Azza wa Jal) wants it to witness.
Starting the Greater Struggle involves closing our eyes to the material world (dunya). As we begin to lose our desire for dunya, our spiritual seeing and vision start to open. To open the innermost secret (Sir Sir), we must control our physical desires (hawa). The Prophet Muhammad (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) exemplified this by sleeping on a bamboo mat, which left marks on his body, a visible testament to his detachment from worldly comforts.
